Partnering with companies, government agencies, NGOs, and stakeholders, SCS strives to advance sustainable development goals through independent assessment, the application of sound science, and innovative solutions. Through these services, SCS enables decision-makers and purchasers to make informed decisions, giving innovators a competitive edge, and helping to drive the development of leadership standards to create a framework for continuous improvement.

The SCS Recycled Content Certification

It evaluates products made from pre-consumer or post-consumer material diverted from the waste stream. Certification measures the percentage of recycled content for the purpose of making an accurate recyclability claim in the marketplace.

What does this mean for ARCHES® papers?

Pre-consumer recycled material

This concerns cotton linters, which are fine, silky fibres on the seeds in the cotton flower. Linters are a by-product of cotton with no use in textile manufacturing, but which are a precious ingredient in paper making.

Post-consumer recycled material

This is the material produced by the recycling of waste paper at the Arches paper mill. All the paper that is unfit for sale is recycled. This material is then returned to the production process.

Contrary to common belief, a 100% cotton paper, such as ARCHES® Aquarelle for instance, does not contain 100% recycled material. This is because paper contains other ingredients as well as the fibres (mineral fillers, sizing agents, etc.).
