The luminous watercolours of Christian Koivumaa
Christian Koivumaa was born in 1978 in Northern Sweden and grew up there. Very quickly he opted for a sporting career, in karate; After succeeding brilliantly on the international stage, injury forced him into early retirement. This marked the opening of a new chapter in his life as he joined the art world with the same commitment that had earned him his success in sport. He chose to take up watercolours. Watercolour painting is a difficult technique which requires deep concentration and presence. As a top level sportsman, that is something Christian knows well.

With a firm hand, he manages to depict elusive elements like the play of the shadows in the heat of the city streets, the mysterious aurora borealis playing out over the treetops of a spruce forest or the vast, breathtaking expanses of the Scandinavian mountains.

The spectacular, mysterious northern lights are a recurrent theme in Koivumaa’s art. They hold a special place in his heart as they remind him of his roots, his childhood spent in the magical natural landscapes of Tornedalie.
If you look closely at his works on paper, you will see both an extraordinary amount of detail and a mysterious depth. Christian Koivumaa is a timeless artist whose works depict our era as well as managing to capture the immutable.
