Vincent Jeannerot, botanical watercolourist

Botanical watercolour painter Vincent Jeannerot was born in Lyon in 1961. His taste for contemplating nature began during family walks in the countryside around Lyon. Very early on he found that he wanted to paint the plants that he was discovering. After an art-based baccalaureate, he studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. His botanical plates painted in watercolours, which he appreciates for the depth and transparency of their pigments, quickly attracted the attention of the public and the art world.

He chooses his plants and then paints them meticulously on white paper at a 1:1 scale. This requires close observation and great accuracy, the aim being to faithfully reproduce the way the plant grows in its natural state. Every detail is important, the shades in the colours, the slightest shadows – it is this consistent rigour that brings his works to life. Vincent Jeannerot’s delicate, fine, precise watercolours have a degree of realism that makes them truly unique.

Vincent Jeannerot’s studio shop

Vincent has his own premises in Vieux-Lyon. It consists of three spaces: a gallery-shop where he displays his works and offers them for sale alongside merchandise such as tea towels, scented candles, greetings cards, Limoges porcelain items, etc., a studio where he gives botanical watercolour courses, and finally his own artist’s studio upstairs.
It is a friendly place, where passionate artists and botanists come together to share knowledge and exchange ideas.

“Having the feeling, after more than thirty years of work and doubts, that my watercolours are more alive, inspire new ways of looking at the plant world and bring new emotions to people fills me with joy. Revealing the secret life of my models, in their most minute nuances, shadows and details, requires humility and self-denial in the face of the beauty of nature. Passing on these sensations with the high standard of precision and observation it requires has become a matter of course for me.
In short, my greatest satisfaction today is sharing my experience as well as my know-how, and painting, always.”
