Matty Burnham, optimistic illustrator

Matty Burnham is an English ink and watercolour illustrator. Although originally from Cumbria, he now lives near Leeds in Yorkshire. The region’s beautiful landscapes are a significant source of inspiration for him. He also loves visiting less familiar areas such as the incredible Northumbrian castles or the lochside cottages of the Highlands, and illustrating them.

Matty Burnham on Arches paper

Matty Burnham is an ink and watercolour illustrator originally from Cumbria now living near Leeds in Yorkshire and these beautiful local landscapes are a significant inspiration for him. He always works on cotton paper and, through practiced techniques, achieves a distinctive granulating effect within the washes of watercolour. Adopting the philosophy that life is too short for grey shadows, he mixes purples to create shade, cast-shadows and, subsequently, the sunlight which is a focus in his work.
