Karlyn Shahnazarian

Karlyn Shahnazarian is a Canadian with a multitude of roles: mum to 2 children, educator and artist. She has not always considered herself artistic, but recently has felt a need for a creative outlet, a way to express herself through artistic activities.

It was during the Covid lockdown that Karlyn was able to explore new modes of expression and start to grasp the real extent of her abilities. She started by experimenting with sketching before eventually finding watercolours. The complexity of this medium immediately appealed to her. The fragility, the attitude and most of all the fluidity.

“Watercolour set me free. Little by little the paints taught me to let go of rules and expectations. They guided me toward the light and helped me to find beauty and purpose in the shadows. Once I began to trust in the process, I was able to create freely and eventually developed my own style. Embracing unconventional techniques, I’ve been able to create watercolour landscapes that exist somewhere between fact and fiction. Atmospheric landscapes that personify and celebrate the trees and bring peace to the viewer. It is a magical journey and I am grateful for it every day.”
