Yukoring uses traditional watercolour to bring life to Japanese pop culture
Based in Osaka, Yukoring is a Japanese artist who reinterprets contemporary youth through her own distinctive cultural perspective. Influenced by Japanese pop culture from a young age, she places the young female figure at the core of her work, offering an innovative vision imbued with poetry and freshness.

With a background in illustration, Yukoring has forged a singular approach: pushing back against the omnipresence of digital technology today to create a genuine, physical connection between viewers and her artwork. She delicately explores a boldly contemporary style of painting that nonetheless remains firmly grounded in tradition and hands-on techniques.
A self-taught artist, Yukoring developed her skills in watercolour and illustration independently. To fuel her passion and promote her artistic universe, she shares her pieces on social media and in specialist magazines, while also taking part in creative events open to art enthusiasts. This gradual journey led her to begin her freelance career in 2021. The following year, she held her first solo exhibition, paving the way for many more shows in Japan.
Although watercolour remains her medium of choice, Yukoring occasionally incorporates acrylic, gouache or gold leaf into her pieces as needed. Her technique, based on meticulous transparent overlapping layers, quite literally sculpts light on the paper, achieving a depth and intensity rarely seen in this discipline. Through this technical mastery, she reconciles depth and transparency, creating worlds that feel both delicate and vibrant.
Beyond her artistic practice, Yukoring is actively committed to promoting traditional techniques and materials. As an ARCHES® Resident Artist, she shares her know-how through workshops and technical publications, supporting countless projects for clients in the animation, video game and VTuber industries.

Her approach is fuelled by a deep love of art. She regularly visits museums and is especially drawn to Western Impressionist works such as those of Monet, as well as ukiyo-e and Japanese painting.
The guiding thread of her creative process is the transformation of illustrations from Japanese pop culture into fully realised paintings, affirming the irreplaceable value of original, hand-crafted art.
