Nelson Hammer
Drawing and painting have been part of Nelson Hammer’s life since childhood, evolving into oil painting in college before being set aside after his 1969 graduation for career and family. In 2014, a spontaneous purchase of watercolour supplies reignited his passion, leading him to paint birds inspired by photographs and a fascination with avian detail. Nelson is now a Signature Member of the New England Watercolour Society. Due to exhibition requirements, he expanded his focus to landscapes, drawing on his career as a landscape architect, though his love of birds led him to the Galápagos in 2023. Painting has been a source of grounding through recent years of loss, retirement, and major life changes, guided by a largely self-taught, trial-and-error approach.
