Katell Le Mat
Katell Le Mat is a painter, illustrator and calligrapher. She underwent training in academic drawing at the Penninghen school in Paris and exhibited her work in Basel while still a student. She grew up in Kyoto until the age of 13, and Japan has had a major influence on her artistic universe. In 2008, she earned her artistic director diploma with honours for her project L’Ombre des mots [The Shadow of Words], in which she endeavours to depict untranslatable Japanese words through semi-abstract calligraphy and photography, aiming to evoke a visceral understanding rather than relying solely on intellectual comprehension. Her artistic sensibility is a blend of Japanese and Western traditions of painting, placing an emphasis on brushstrokes, textures, colours and emotions. She frequently exhibits in France and Japan and collaborates with Japanese companies for design projects. Her pieces are collected by French and Japanese clients.
