I’ve been painting in watercolour for around 35 years, ever since I moved to Reims. I had the privilege of meeting the Belgian artist Roland Palmaerts, who comes to Reims three times a year. He’s someone who naturally passes on his knowledge and passion to others.

Patrick France grew up in the small town of Épinal, in the Vosges region of France. This artist with a passion for watercolour painting and local heritage has been inspired since childhood by the art and work of his father. After studying graphic design, he became an illustrator for the Imagerie d’Épinal; in 1999, he was awarded the title of ‘archaeological watercolourist’.

I like paper, ink, painting, poetry, music, theatre, literature and cooking. I tried to combine all these in a collection called “La Cuisine des Poètes” (The Poets’ Kitchen).

I turn to nature – plants, minerals and animals, including people – for inspiration. I draw my subjects with a naturalist’s eye and compile my drawings in sketchbooks. These become the foundation for all my pieces.

What counts for me is not so much technique as the message. So I don’t favour any particular technique. I started presenting my work at a solo exhibition at the Galerie Schumm-Braunstein in Paris in 2013 with engravings and drawings. But I am also able to work in other media – sculpture, photography, sound, installation. Each idea leads to another, and I don’t limit myself to a tool, or material…

Since our inception, we have attempted to recreate traditional patterns of 18th and 19th century England, France and the United States, using materials and techniques identical, or very similar, to the original ones.
